While alopecia is primarily an autoimmune condition, the health of your hair, like any other part of your body, is influenced by your overall well-being, including your diet. While a healthy diet won’t cure alopecia, it can support overall hair health and potentially contribute to a thicker, shinier hair.
Essential Nutrients for Hair Health:
Several nutrients play a vital role in hair growth and maintenance:

- Protein: The building block of hair, protein is essential for hair structure and growth.
- Iron: Helps carry oxygen to hair follicles, supporting hair growth.
- Zinc: Contributes to hair follicle repair and growth.
- Biotin: Important for overall hair health and metabolism.
- Vitamin D: Plays a role in hair follicle growth and health.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Promotes hair moisture and shine.
Foods to Include in Your Diet:
As a parent with two young children that can be picky eaters, and have their own preference to the foods they love, this can be hard to incorporate. I would recommend trying a few things before trying to switch your diet. To Incorporate these essential nutrients into your diet, consider including:

- Lean Proteins: Chicken, fish, beans and tofu
- Iron-Rich Food: Red meat, spinach, lentils, fortified cereals
- Zinc-Rich Foods: Oysters, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas
- Biotin-Rich Foods: Eggs, avocado, nuts, sweet potatoes
- Vitamin D- Rich Foods: Fatty fish, fortified dairy products, egg yolks
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Fatty Fish, flaxseeds, chia sees, walnuts
An important note to think about is that a lot of experts recommend an anti-inflammatory diet. When feeding a family it’s hard to change your whole diet especially when trying to stick to a budget as some of these foods can add up pretty quickly. I have tried chickpea pasta, I would recommend this as a great alternative to regular pasta as it is less sodium and carbs and more protein.
Benefits of Using Herbs:
While more research is needed, some herbs have been traditionally used to support hair health. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider before using herbs as supplements. Some commonly mentioned herbs include:

- Saw Palmetto: Often used for hair loss in men, but some women have reported benefits
- Gingko Biloba: Believed to improve circulation, which can indirectly support hair health.
- Horsetail: Rich in Silica, a mineral associated with hair strength.

Supplements: A Cautious Approach
While supplements can be tempting, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplements. Too much of certain nutrients can lead to imbalances. It’s recommended to prioritize whole foods over supplements whenever possible.
The Importance of Overall Health:
Are there any people or parents with kids diagnosed with alopecia that are confused as to why overall they are really healthy but they keep losing hair? I have felt the same, it was hard to accept a diagnosis of Alopecia Areata with no reason as to why this was happening. Remember, a balanced a diet is just one piece of the puzzle. Other factors like stress management, hydration, and regular sleep also contribute to hair health.
It’s important to note that while a healthy diet can support overall hair health, it won’t reverse alopecia. If you’re concerned about hair loss, consult with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
